Is anybody else getting cabin fever?  I’m longing for spring gardening to start!  I also know that once spring gardening starts, it will be non-stop till everything has been harvested and preserved in the fall.  AKA a lot of work!  Just the same, I’m tired of the winter cold.  But for now, I’ll have to get through the winter gardening dreaming of spring/

This is what my vegetable garden looks like now.  What garden you ask?  Well, it’s right there under all that snow.

Here’s another view.

Pay no attention to that boat under the tarp!  That’s my Tommy’s fishing boat waiting out the winter.

Update: The boat was donated and no longer adorns my lawn. Yay!

Winter Gardening

So in the winter, we are in the dream mode.  Case in point:

What I want you to see is the chain link panels.  Those are actually panels from a dog kennel.  I don’t use that for my dog.  What I use it for is a trellis to grow cucumbers and spaghetti squash on so they grow up instead of sprawling out all over the place.

There are some blueberry bushes, Raspberry vines, and Strawberries under all that snow too.

Winter Herbal Dreams

That’s not the only garden I have.  I also have an herb garden in another location right outside my back lower level door.   Doesn’t look much different than the herb garden right now.  But wait till the late spring and early summer.  It will be completely transformed!

Obviously, there isn’t much I can do with this under 1-2 feet of snow.  But, there is one thing I can do.  I’ve started gathering coffee grounds, egg shells, tea bags, and vegetable scraps into an ice cream bucket that has a lid.  And when it’s full, I take it out and spread it around on the vegetable garden to add some extra nutrients to the soil.

My Tom also found some free pallets that we will use to build a compost bin this spring.

Update: you can see them here!

Future Dreams

I also plan to double the size of my veggie garden this year to increase the variety of what I grow.  And, I’m planning to add some fruit trees as well so, hopefully, a few years down the road, I will be able stop buying apples from the local apple orchard in the fall for my homemade applesauce.

So far, I have the plan for the garden plots, and what I will be growing in each section already drawn out on graph paper.  I’m sure there’s an app for that but, I still like to do some things the old way.  I haven’t totally given in to technology.

Update: I have totally given in to technology with the Mother Earth News Garden Planner

Don’t get me wrong, technology is great, but there’s something to be said about stepping away from the computer/ipad/phone screen.  I also still like to read real books but that’s another post.

Update: Yep technology is great. But I still read books

Once late spring is here, I’ll show you my flower beds as well.  I actually have a lot of plans for those too.  Wow!  I think the cabin fever is turning into an epidemic!

While there isn’t much I can actually do outside right now (well besides shovel snow), I can plan for the season so that, once it gets here, I will be ready.

I can’t wait to show you the technique I use for expanding my garden space without digging up sod.  I’ve done this several times and it really does work.  Tune in this spring for more details on that subject!

Update: That info is also found Here

I hope you’re as excited as I am about the coming Spring!  Happy gardening!
